This is "For Pete's Sake" written by Peter Tork and first released on HeadQuarters. Is it true the Monkees didn't play their own instruments? No. Nez, Peter and Micky had experience as working musicians prior to auditioning for the Monkees. However, Don Kirshner preferred to record with studio musicians who were more seasoned and whose time wasn't taken up with shooting a series. Despite this, Peter Tork has a guitar credit on the very first album and all four were expected to perform as a group on tour. After ousting Kirshner and winning more musical control, the group continued to utilize session musicians, by choice. This was not unusual. Both the Beatles and the Beach Boys were highly respected and were making good use of outside musicians on their recordings. 30 years later, the Monkees reunited to record "Justus," so named because it is just them - writing, singing, playing, producing, arranging, etc. I've heard that the musicians from one of the sessions stayed together to form their own band. Is this true and, if so, can you tell me more about it? Well, sort of, although it came about a little differently.. After Dylan's Nashville Skyline, it became trendy to record in Nashville, with Nashville sessionmen. Producer Elliot Mazer, to cash in on the trend, sought to assemble a band of Nashville's best sessionmen. Two of the ten musicians had appeared on Dylan's LP, five of the ten were from Nez's Nashville sessions. The band, Area Code 615, recorded two albums, Area Code 615 and A Trip In The Country, which may still be available through CDNow Band members were (N denotes Nez sessionmen, D denotes Dylan sessionmen:) D - Kenneth Buttery - Drums N - David Briggs - Keyboard - - Mac Gayden - Guitar N - Norbert Putnam - Bass D - Charlie McCoy - Harmonica N - Wayne Moss - Guitar - - Ken Luber - Piano - - Weldon Myric - Steel Guitar N - Buddy Spicher - Fiddle N - Bobby Thompson - Banjo *Side note: several members of Area Code 615 were either members of or sessionmen for the band Barefoot Jerry. Chip Douglas looks familiar, why? He was a member of the Turtles, prior to producing HeadQuarters. In fact, when Mike offered him the honor of producing the group, it was on the condition that he leave the Turtles. Did any of the Monkees produce any of the Monkees music? Yes, each Monkee earned production credits on individual tracks. They did it all - each wrote, each sang, each played instruments and each produced. The stigma of not being a band heavily involved with its own music came from Kirschner's reign, when they were not allowed to become involved. During that time, (the first two albums,) only Peter has a guitar credit and only Mike has writing and production credits. Is it true, as Kirschner said on the VH1 "Behind the Music" special, that everything after his ousting as musical director failed, miserably? Not unless a number one, triple platinum album is considered a miserable failure! HeadQuarters was number one for one week, then the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper album knocked it to number two, where it remained through the summer. Second only to Sgt. Pepper is pretty impressive for ANY band! Considering that Sgt. Pepper is/was one of the best albums of all time, that Colgems did not provide a fraction of the promotion it had for previous releases and that no single or radio cut was released in the US, the Monkees held their own QUITE well. Pisces Aquarius Capricorn and Jones LTD, the second album without Kirschner, also reached number one, where it remained for five weeks. This album spawned two hit singles and also went triple platinum. The Birds, The Bees and the Monkees charted at number three, going single platinum and spawning two platinum singles, one of which, Daydream Believer, hit number one. It was after this that interest in the Monkees albums waned, partly due to lack of promotion and the cancellation of the series, partly because almost all teen-idol pop sensations have a short shelf life. Is it true that Jimi Hendrix opened for the Monkees? Yes. Micky caught his act in England and thought he was amazing. When Micky tells audiences that Jimi's set was drowned out by a chorus of "We want Davy, we want Davy..." he isn't joking. Is it true that Peter emceed at Woodstock and Micky can be seen in the footage? No, you're thinking of Monterey Pops and if you're looking for Micky, play close attention to the Ravi Shankar set - yep, that's him in the headress. Which Monkee quit the group, first? Peter quit after the filming of 33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee. Mike remained for two more albums. Davy and Micky recorded Changes, after Mike's departure, to fulfill contractual obligations, then Davy quit, effectively ending The Monkees. Micky is the only Monkee never to quit the group, officially. Are the mono albums the same versions of the songs as the stereo albums? .Not always. If you're a "completist", you should get the post-Kirschner mono versions, too. For instance, the mono Pisces Aquarius Capricorn and Jones LTD has an extended fade on She Hangs Out, that isn't on the stereo LP. The mono Birds, the Bees & the Monkees LP reportedly has several different mixes and is very noticeably different from the stereo release. Unfortunately, only the mono version of HeadQuarters has seen official release on CD - as part of the Rhino Handmade HeadQuarters Sessions box. Is there a true stereo version of Listen To The Band? Until recently, I had thought the only stereo versions of this song were simulated stereo mastered from mono. Thanks to Markshark, I've learned that a true stereo version, reflecting the single version (organ solo cut out of middle,) was made available on the LTTB box set in 1991, as well as on I'm a Believer and Other Hits and the Monkees Music Box set. I'm a new fan and I don't own any of the Monkees albums, yet -- where should I start? Most new fans start with a greatest hits or best of collection - any one of them will do. After that, it's up to you whether to start with the "original nine albums" or to go with the box set. (Note: The Listen To The Band Box Set will be retired and replaced by The Monkees Music Box in Feb., 2001.) If you decide to go with the original nine, I suggest buying them in order of release to appreciate the evolution of the group. After you have these, you should get all three volumes of the Missing Links series - I recommend buying volume two, first -- it's a great Monkees album, on its own. To round out the basic collection, if you didn't opt for the box set, you'll need the reunion releases: That Was Then This is Now, Pool It! and JustUs. If you can't afford to build the entire basic collection and want only the absolute must-haves, either save up for the box set or get Pisces Aquarius, Capricorn and Jones LTD, HeadQuarters, Missing Links volume 2, Head Soundtrack and any greatest hits release. Micky's song Randy Scouse Git had to be released in England as Alternate Title, why? Micky heard these words in England and didn't know what they meant. ("randy" - horny; "scouse" - slur against working-class Liverpudlians; "git," -idiot, short for illigitimate.) When asked to provide an alternate title, he did. What song are Micky and Peter singing in "Hitting the High Seas?" This is an acoustic version of "Tear the Top Right Off My Head". According to Rhino's Missing Links 3, the masters for this version no longer exist. Copies can be found only on various bootlegs. I love Micky and Peter's "I Was Born In East Virginia" on HeadQuarters sessions, what can you tell me about the song? While this song has been recorded under several titles, the correct title is "East Virginia Blues." Peter & Micky sing a variation on the traditional folk version of this old bluegrass standard which is very different from the much older traditional bluegrass lyrics and their most common variations. This folk version is lacking any hint of some of the traditional verses, has lillies and not linen on the fair maiden's breast and borrows a line or two from another bluegrass standard, "Dark Hollar Blues." (aka "Dark Hollow Blues") Noting these differences from the traditional bluegrass, it is possible that the folk standard evolved from The Carter Family's 1934 recording of the song. The Carter Family not only recorded the song with a lyric differing greatly from the more well known variations of traditional verses, they later recorded "East Virginia Blues #2 (1935) which continues the story of the song in new verses. Afficianados of this song may wish to seek out versions recorded by: The Carter Family, Pete Seeger, Woodie Guthrie, The Grateful Dead, Ralph Stanley (or The Stanley Brothers) and Joan Baez. During "Band Six" on Headquarters, is that Peter saying "that was a little too long"? No. This was Chip Douglas, the album's producer. What is everyone saying during "Zilch"? Mike: It is of my opinion that the people are intending Micky: Never mind the furthermore the plea is self defense Davy: China Clipper calling Alameda Peter: Mr. Dovalina, Mr Bob Dovalina (common alternate spellings include Dobalina, Dobolina, Dovolina) How can I get copies or bootlegs? At your own risk. Pirating (copying of material which has been released, officially) and bootlegging (copying of material which has not been released, officially) are both illegal and people do get prosecuted for them. However, under specific circumstances, some musicians and copyright/license holders are OK with it and a very select few even encourage it (at a free-trading level) as a means to increase or reward the fanbase. The Bootlegs discography details a few of the known Monkees bootlegs. When asking for or offering dupes/boots, first ask the forum owner whether it's allowed. Never ask for or offer copies of material which is still or soon to be available at retail, even if the material is officially out of print. Never post long trade, wish or for-sale lists, instead, offer to e-mail your complete list, privately, on request. Never conduct transactions in the forum, do it in private mail. Also, be aware that most forums do not allow the selling of ANYthing for a profit and that most fans do not appreciate it. I read the discographies. Do you own all of these albums? Not hardly! I have never even seen most of them. I get a lot of mail asking very detailed questions about albums, song versions and album covers - I know only what's already mentioned in the FAQs or discographies, most of which was supplied by fellow fans and compiled by the previous owner of the FAQs. Where can I go to find out what certain Monkees (or solo) recordings are worth? http://hometown.aol.com/JoeAlterio/mrzero.html Mr. Zero's Monkees Page is a fantastic source for values of vinyl, 8-track, reel-to-reel etc. What were the New Monkees? The New Monkees was a failed attempt in the 80s to recreate the Monkees phenomenom with four new actors/musicians. There was one album, which, despite being long out of print, was still languishing unsold in cut-out bins through the mid to late 90s. Who were the New Monks? This was a legitimate band put together by Peter Tork in late 1980 and with whom he recorded the famous "Peter's Back" single (featuring "Stepping Stone" and "Higher and Higher") in February 1981. Band lineup: Vince Barranco (drums), Nelson Bogart (guitar, trumpet), Paul Ill (bass, music director), Phil Simon (guitar), and of course, Peter Tork (guitar, lead vocals). They toured Japan in August 1981, and broke up while on the road in the USA in March 1982. (info from Torka) What's up with that racoon reference in "Gonna Buy Me A Dog?" Micky says "I'd buy a racoon but John already has one" Davy replies "yeah 35 bucks" John is none other than John London who was Nez' bandmate before and after the Monkees. (ie: Mike, John, & Bill and The First National Band). At the time, John owned a pet racoon which we are to presume cost him $35.00. On The Monkees album cover, Micky Peter and Davy are smiling, but Mike looks like he's is the middle of a frown/sentence, what's up with that? According to Jordan Keller, son of Jack Keller, The photographer had been taking pictures all day and Mike was getting a bit temperamental and impatient. He told the photographer to wait until the count of three to take that photo, and he counted one . . . two . . . Thhrr (Snap) eeee. Of course, that's the shot they used. Isn't it nice to know that someone as talented and respected as Nez has about the same luck we have? How do you pronounce "The Monkees Present...?" The full title of the album is "The Monkees Present Micky, David & Michael" (pree' zent - introduce.) This is proven by listening to the radio promotion on the Rhino reissue CD. Originally, this was to be a two album set with one side per Monkee, but when Peter left, it was condensed to one album. Some fans speculate that Nez also intended the other pronunciation (preh' zunt - current) as a play on words to indicate that, at the present time, there were only three Monkees. In the series, which guy played which instruments? Micky - drums, moog synth Davy - tamborine and maracas, misc. incidental percussion Mike - Guitar Peter - Bass, banjo, piano Speaking of the Moog synth, what can you tell me about it? First, it's not pronounced as it's spelled, it rhymes with vogue. Secondly, very few of these instruments existed. According to Micky's Autobiography, he was approached on the set by a man trying to sell them and, after hearing that it could make any sound in the universe, had to have one. A few weeks later, Micky played the synthesizer in the studio on Star Collector and the Monkees became the first band to use the Moog or any synthesizer on a popular recording. Later, synth music grew into a genre of its own. Where can I get Monkees sheet music or tab? You should be able to order Monkees Greatest Hits music for piano, vocals and guitar for about $18 from your local music store. Where can I find lyrics or MIDIs? Visit Brad Waddell's Monkees Homepage. http://www.monkees.net Do you have a sessionography on this site? No. If you're interested in all the who, what, wheres and whens of Monkees recordings, Andrew Sandoval is currently writing a book which should satisfy your thirst for knowledge. Can't wait? That's Ok, you can visit Ken Wang's Monkees Sessionography. http://www.geocities.com/SunsetStrip/Towers/3152 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Monkees Singles Last Train to Clarksville / Take a Giant Step (PS) Colgems 66-1001 (8/66) Note: There are several variations of the sleeve for this record. Remaining tracks are single versions, except Porpoise Song, which includes the longer instrumental omitted from the single version.
